Real Madrid’s sensational 18, Bayern Munich’s rare 0: UCL Stats

The UEFA Champions League 2023-24 final is set. Real Madrid‘s dramatic win against Bayern Munich saw the La Liga champions qualify for yet another Champions League final. Kylian Mbappe and PSG tried their hardest but a Mats Hummels-inspired Borussia Dortmund saw them off in the second leg in Paris. Real will face Dortmund in the final at Wembley on June 1.

Before that, though, By The Numbers has a look at the best numbers from the second-leg of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League semifinals:

Bayern Munich will end the 2023-24 season trophy-less, the first such season for the club since 2008-09.

1, 6

Edin Terzic will manage his first Champions League final in three weeks time, and the task facing him could not be any stiffer, as he faces a record-extending Carlo Ancelotti, who will be managing in his sixth final, two more than any other manager. Real are also unbeaten against German opposition in finals, previously beating Eintract Frankfurt in 1960 and Bayer Leverkusen in 2002.

Alphonso Davies become the first Canadian player to score in the Champions League knockout stages.

2, 162

Joselu is only the second player, after Rodrygo against Manchester City in the 2021-22 season, to score a match-winning goal in second-half stoppage time in the semifinals or later. There were 162 seconds between his two goals that turned the match and the tie on its head against Bayern.

Only two players from Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund squad that made the final in 2013 still remain at the club. Mats Hummels’s towering performance and goal took them there, for what will be Marco Reus’s last game for the club.

Borussia Dortmund reached the Champions League final for the third time after 1996-97, when they won and 2012-13, when they lost. Incidentally, their last appearance in the final 11 years ago also came at Wembley.

3, 18

Jadon Sancho played three games for Manchester United this season before moving to Dortmund on loan in January. 18 matches later, he has qualified for the Champions League final with the German side.

Real Madrid have won four times in the Champions League this season in matches when they have conceded first. That is the most by a side in a single season since Real Madrid’s five wins after conceding first in their successful 2016-17 campaign.

4, 6, 30

PSG had 30 shots without scoring a single goal in the second leg against Borussia Dortmund, the highest on record since 2003 for a team that hadn’t scored in a Champions League game. PSG rattled the woordwork four times in the match, which is the most on record for a Champions League knockout stage match. In fact, PSG hit the woodwork six times across the tie, which is also the highest on record in the Champions League knockout stages since 2003.

Joselu has scored five goals as a substitute this season for Real Madrid, only one player has more goals in all competition as a substitute for a La Liga team this season.

Real Madrid have now eliminated Bayern Munich seven times in the Champions League/European Cup, the most a club has been eliminated by a single opponent in knockout ties in the competition.

Real Madrid have advanced in their last nine Champions League knockout ties against German opposition. Their last loss? Well, against their opponents in the final. Borussia Dortmund eliminated them in the semifinals back in 2013, thanks to an inspired Robert Lewandowski.

Carlo Ancelotti has now gone 10 Champions League games unbeaten against Bayern Munich as a manager. No other manager has faced a single club more in the competition without facing defeat.

With eight goals and four assists in the Champions League this season, Harry Kane’s 12 direct goal involvements are the most ever by an Englishman in a single Champions League season.

Real Madrid will play their 18th Champions League/European Cup final against Dortmund on June 1. They will seek a record-extending 15th title. The second most successful team is AC Milan, who have won it seven times.

No goalkeeper has conceded more goals against Real Madrid in the competition than Manuel Neuer’s 18, which is tied with Galatasaray’s Fernando Muslera.

31, 0

Aurelien Tchouameni has started 31 games this season. Real Madrid are unbeaten in all of them.
